Plague doctor animation 1/2

It is time to make an animation with my favourite tool for it: Krita! I'm starting with one that has been in my mind since the last spring, when Covid-19 inspired me with plague doctor animation idea. I have always found that mask they wore fascinating and because I like steampunk style was also planning to add that theme in the artwork. I made the first sketch and was planning to make a simple closeup animation of the character and maybe some birds flying in the background and a little bit of smoke. For some reason it never became more than an unfinished sketch, until now! I changed the plan and draw the sketch ready about the whole character, because in the 2/2 part I will make a city background for it with some animations.

I made some slight changes and the final line art keeping in mind the parts I want to animate about the character and draw them to separate layers.

Next part took long time but was the most exciting part of the process because it was the actual
animation part and I was able to see my idea working. I focused on different parts, starting from the clothes moving in the wind. It felt very useful learning experience to try different kind of ways for the lantern and the smoker to hang naturally. A lot of trial and error, small changes here and there, cleanup and this was the result.

After successful line art animation I started with flat colors. In my opinion this is the phase where you know if you want to be an animator or not. Coloring takes time and after selecting the combination you want there is no creativity in it, you just repeat it frame after frame. This was also the most time consuming part for me and I really hope to find faster ways to do it in the future.

Then it's time for the last details; shadows and highlights. I kept them fairly simple for the sake of faster progress and also because I might make changes after drawing the background.

And after getting all frames finished with their details and being happy with the result, it is safe to say the 1/2 part of this animation is ready. Here is the final GIF of my plague doctor!

Thanks for reading and watching my animation! Next time plague doctor animation 2/2!

The Great Mouse Detective

Childhood favorite This was hands down one of my favorite animated films that I saw when I was a child. I remember going often to a video rental shop with my family and every time we went there and I got to choose the movie, I would choose The Great Mouse Detective. Over and over again. Talk about obsession. It must have been a very bad financial decision for my parents not to buy it for me. I forgot about it for years but as a teenager for some reason I suddenly remembered that it exists and how much I loved it and started to look for an opportunity to watch it again. (Is this how normal teenagers behave?) Around that time I was reading Detective Conan manga and really liked detective stories so that's probably why I felt a need to find it. Turned out that my friend had the movie so I was able to borrow it (why can't I ever own it??) and watch it again. I remember being very nervous, what if I don't like it anymore. Fortunately it was as good as I remembered and my obsessi...

Why I want to become an animator

Why I want to become an animator Well I did not want to be an animator when I was young. I didn't think I was able to draw well even when I was certainly drawing a lot. Drawing was only one way to express my ideas that I had for stories. Other outlet was writing and that must have been one of my first dreamjobs, to write books about the stories of my lively imagination. I loved reading comics and watching cartoons and me and my twin sister where able to do that a lot. Probably because that made the twins behave and sit quietly and focused for a while.  I remember how we would act the happenings in the cartoons in our playtime. We would get a sticky tape roll and pretend that it was movie tape and we were filming, acting and later editing a movie. We would create backstories and a world for our toys and have very detailed story series for them. I remember that some kids had trouble keeping up with our plays, but some were instantly excited and into the ideas and usually those became...
2D animation Getting started with tools In the old days animations were drawn on special paper and then transferred onto clear acetate sheets called cels for painting. Then they were photographed frame by frame. Sounds like terrible amount of work, right? Well, hand drawn animators still create their animations frame by frame  using very similar principles as in the beginning. So no laughing for poor  animators of the old times. No need to give up either. Some things have changed! Cels are not in use anymore after scanning drawings into the computer  for digital coloring became possible, and now many hand drawn animators  skip paper altogether and draw directly into the computer using drawing tablets. So yes the process is getting faster all the time. Now that the idea is to become an animator and we have dropped paper and cells from the tools and have a fast glance on my desk where I have my XP-Pen ready for drawing digitally, it's time to choose (2D) animati...
